I’d been trying to keep my feelings for Lira at bay, but the weekend we spent together only strengthened them. Draya’s surprise pregnancy announcement threw me for a loop and gave me the reality check I didn’t know I needed. The phone pressed against my ear, and I heard it ring before Chief picked up.

“Yo, you busy?” I asked. “Some shit is weighing on me, and I gotta tell somebody.”

“What is it?” Chief asked through the receiver.

“Dray’s pregnant,” I announced.

“Oh shit. And how far along is your other baby mama?”

“She’s somewhere in her second trimester,” I answered.

“Damn, you about to have a set of project twins, huh? How you feel about that?”

​“Don’t talk about your nieces or nephews like that. I’m being serious. I don’t know what to do. I can’t be upset about having a child with my wife, right?”

​“I mean, you can, but what kinda man would that make you?” he asked.

​“I’m lowkey happy about expanding my family. I didn’t think it would happen this soon or like this, but I’m okay with it.”

​“There was a time not too long ago when you were callin’ me the father of the year and shit, and now look at you.”

​I chuckled. “Shut up, man. I hope it’s as easy as you make it seem.”

​“It’s anything but easy, and it definitely won’t be with two baby mamas.”

​“Two kids, one mother,” I corrected him.

​“That’s right, my bad. So, question.”

​“Yeah?”

​“You got Lira carrying your seed, Draya carrying the other. You say you're cool with the shit, but why is there so much conflict in your voice?” he queried.

The admission of guilt rolled off my tongue with ease. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want both.”

Chief scoffed. “You always did wanna have your cake and another cake, too.”

“This shit is different.”

“It’s messy, and you know it. It was one thing to fuck another woman; y’all do whatever you want; I’m not judging. But at the end of the day, you are the one that made those vows to Draya. You already know what you should do; I ain’t gotta say it.”
